Happy Homeschooling Habits

Every Friday The Heart of the Matter features a different topic for their meme. This weeks topic...

Happy Habits of a Homeschooler

I am trying to figure out if I have actual habits to make a happy homeschool or if I am just aimlessly traveling along this road of homeschooling. We are very eclectic in how we homeschool. I have my curriculum that I love from different resources but we don't use the all of books consistently everyday even though we do school every day. I guess the biggest habit we have is doing school all the time.

A couple of mornings ago, my kids were eating breakfast and they were trying to figure out how many calories they were eating. My daughters had mixed two cereals together in their bowls so my son automatically added the two numbers together and then got very confused when the milk jug said there were more calories than what the box of cereal said were the calories with milk. And for me it was a bit alarming to hear how many calories he thought was in that little bowl of cereal. So... school lesson.

I taught the kids how to read the nutrition labels based on serving size. I took out the measuring cup and showed them the serving size of the different cereals and put them into an empty bowl so they could actually see it. Then because the girls mixed cereals, they worked on dividing fractions and adding fractions to get mixed fractions. Then they figured out the milk calories. We also discussed how many calories they needed in one day. So... in that little 20 minutes hands on demonstration at the breakfast table, we covered nutrition and math. Wow, and the "school" day hadn't even started yet.

So I guess my biggest habit is turning everything into school.

Weblink Wednesday - More Free Printable Folder Games

I have noticed that my post about Folder Games gets a lot of hits. So this week I have decided to post some more links for Free Folder Games.

Christian Preschool Printables - This site has Biblically themed games. You have to scroll down a bit to get to them. They also have several other printables on this site.

The Dow's Schoolroom - This site has some folder games to print that can be used to help with memorization of Matthew 7:24-27. Scrolling down, they have two other games also.

Games for Learning - This site has more than just folder games. It has several different game ideas that you can use to reinforce many different concepts.

Enchanted Learning - This site has several folder games for you to print. I use this site all the time for different resources.

Pooh Bear Key Signature Folder Game - This is a really neat folder game to help with music theory. You match the keys on honey pots with the appropriate key signature honey pots.

All of these are free printable folder games. If you have any questions about making these games or how to use them in your daily school routine, leave me a comment and I will be sure to help you. For some kids these games help tremendously in the learning process.

Glue and Little Ones - A Teacher's Trick

If you have ever tried to do crafts with little ones you know things can get messy before you have time to realize what is happening. Over the years I have accumulated little tricks that make crafting easier. Here is one tip for you to use when using glue. I did this all the time when I was teaching preschool.

Save the lids to margarine, sour cream and other containers. Turn the lid upside down and squeeze the glue onto the lid. This way you don't use more than you really need. Let the kids "paint" the glue onto the project with q-tips. When you are done with the project, let the glue dry on the lid then peel off the dried glue and throw it away. Saving the lid for next time. You will find that the q-tips come unraveled during use, just replace it as needed. Toss all of them when you are done.

This saves you a huge mess of glue when you are finished, especially if your littles ones do not realize just how strong they are. Believe me, you do not want to clean up that mess.

Sleepy Time Follow-Up

Saturday night Baby G did not sleep like Friday nights wonderful sleep. In fact she hardly slept at all. When she did sleep she was so restless that it wasn't like real sleep at all. I got about 2 complete hours Saturday night. The problem we realized was that it got chilly. We have crazy weather and it had gotten hot for April reaching the 90's. But then we went to unseasonably cool weather in the 60s, and dipping into the 40s at night. I had turned off the heater and didn't think about turning it back on so poor Baby G was cold. The heater is back on now. Last night we had a freeze warning. Crazy weather.
We decided it would be best to keep her home Sunday morning so she could take her morning nap and I stayed home with her. Hubby took the other kids to church with him. Baby G fell asleep around 10:30 and took a 2 1/2 hour nap! I am so glad I didn't try to convince a tired 16 month old to sit through a church service.
Sunday night we were on our back to maybe sleeping through the night. She woke up at 4 hour intervals. Yeah! Maybe, just maybe Baby G will be able to sleep through the night by the time she reaches 18 months on May 21st? Here's praying.
She is 17 months old today. I have a month to work with her. She has been the hardest baby so far. All the others were sleeping 10 to 12 hours solid every night by 4 to 6 months. I have my work cut out for me.

Sweet Sleep

Baby G slept last night! Anyone who has read my blog probably has read that Baby G really doesn't sleep at night. She usually wakes up about every 2 hours and as she is almost 17 months that has made me slightly delirious. I was getting really really worn out and so very exhausted that I think I was on the verge of a breakdown because I am so sleep deprived.

Last night she woke up around midnight, I nursed her (yeah we are still nursing but I do plan on weening her very soon) and put her back to bed. Then I went to bed and crashed for the night. This morning just after 7 she woke up! I got 6 complete uninterrupted hours of sleep last night! HURRAY!!!!! I feel so much better and am really praying that this is the beginning of something really nice.

Weblink Wednesday - Free Worksheets

Have you found yourself in need of a worksheet to reinforce a concept or do you find yourself searching for something for your preschooler or kindergartener to do while you finish up with the older kiddos? Then this is for you. I have 4 worksheet sites to share with you today. My youngest sails through her normal studies everyday so I am always looking for more stuff for her to do.

Learning Page - This is one of my favorites for all the kids. The worksheets are really fun, organized really well, and they have little books you can use too with follow up worksheets.

School Express - They have thousands of worksheets all organized by grade and subject plus many more theme units. And you can pay to become a member to get even more if you want, but I haven't found the need with all the free stuff.

TLS Books - This site is also one of my favorites. I love how this site is set up. It is very well organized and has plenty of worksheets for many grade levels.

RHL School - This site has a lot of worksheets. I haven't used it as much as the other three because it takes a moment to figure out how to maneuver around the site but it does have many free worksheets.

Teaching Your Child to Worship (pt 2)

I wanted to finish writing my thoughts about keeping my kids in the church service and not sending them to Sunday school. (Read the first post here.) I wanted to explore the New Testament about why we need to keep them with us so that we could teach them about worshiping the Lord. I discovered something I did not really expect. In the New Testament, we are to take our example from our children! Jesus uses children as the example of how we are to worship. It is awesome to me how he designs life. The first shall be last and the last shall be first. As adults, we think we know everything when in reality God reveals himself to our children in order for us to learn from them. How awesome is that?

Matthew 21:12 - 16

Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer,' but you have made it a 'den of thieves.'" Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant and said to Him, "Do You hear what these are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes. Have you never read, 'Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise'?"

The adults had turned the temple in Jerusalem into a market place. The priests saw Jesus overturn the tables and perform healings to the sick and they were upset but the children praised Jesus when they saw him. God has perfected the praise of our children. I want to be with my children so that I can learn from them as they worship. Yes, it is my responsibility to teach them how to worship but we can also learn from them. I believe God designed it that way, to him children are just as important as adults are. He never looks at age, stature, or position; he looks at the heart.

We can learn something from our children’s prayers. Children pray with such innocence and get straight to the point. Have you ever gone to a prayer meeting where someone is long-winded while praying? I have, and I have even been guilty of uttering those long-winded prayers. We, as adults, could take a lesson from the children. I believe God wants us to. That is why he perfected the praise out of their mouths. They are not praising to impress others. They are praising out of their sincerity to the Lord. If they don’t feel like it, they wont’ praise. I watch my little ones during worship and can tell when they do not want to sing, because they do not they will not sing just to impress someone. They only sing if they mean it. Now, as a parent, it is my responsibility to teach them to worship out of obedience and allow God to change their desire to worship. I have had to tell my kids to worship even though they do not feel like it. They will sing at first only to obey but you can watch the transformation as God works in their heart and draws them unto him. You can see the transformation come over them. I have watched many people worship, some will worship like crazy with their hands up, and clapping, however, I have to wonder if they are really worshiping that intensely or if it is just a show to impress others. As adults, we are very capable of pretending to worship to impress. We care what those around us think; we will tame our worship if we are self-conscience at a new church that does not worship they way we are used to. In order not to look like we are out of place, we will become more or less animated in our worship. Children are not like that. I watch my kids and know when they are excited or when they are just worshiping out of obedience.

Mark 9:36&37

Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, "Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me."

Jesus spoke these words immediately after telling them that to be first you must be last and a servant of all. Often times the children get pushed back as being the least among us. “Oh don’t listen to them they’re just children.” Jesus put a child in the middle of the group, in a place of honor. We need to follow this example and receive our children with honor. I am not just saying our own, but all children. When we put the children in their own little service, are we putting them in a place of honor? Or, are we sending them off to do their thing while we do the important stuff?

Mark 10:13 - 16

Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. "Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it." And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.

What do you think the disciples were thinking when they sent the children away? Do you think that maybe they thought the children were too young to understand who Jesus is? Or, maybe they thought that Jesus was too busy to deal with the children. However, Jesus says we are to learn from the children. He says that we need to receive the kingdom of God as a child does. Children believe what we say without question. Have you ever seen their faith? They have great confidence in their parents to provide for every need they have and completely take care of them. Many kids believe in the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and Santa Claus without any doubt. Why? Because their parents said, they were real and that was all they needed. So, if God says to us not to worry about loosing your job because he already has it taken care of, then do not worry. A child would not, so we should not. Amazing faith.

When our son was two years old, we decided that it would be in our kids’ best interest to have them stay in service with us. This was not an easy decision to make. We were going to a church that had a full-scale children’s ministry and a full-scale youth ministry. We had some friends who kept their kids in service and they were our inspiration but we struggled with the decision. The turning point was when our son escaped from the toddler room two weeks in a row! That was the decisive factor for me, knowing that they could not keep track of my overly active energetic son. So, into service he went. I am not saying it was easy to keep him still for the whole service at first; it was hard. And we caught so much flack from everyone else but we held our ground. It seemed so right, not because I knew that he would not escape me but because it was all of us in service as a family together. The kids love worship and as they grow they are really enjoying what they are learning. We are blessed that our church believes that children belong in service too. Next time, how I keep an active two-year-old quiet and still for an entire church service.

Fun Filled Friday

We had a fun filled Friday that I just had to share about. We did half a days worth of school and then took advantage of the beautiful sunny spring day. It was actually really warm today it reached 87 degrees! Tomorrow they say it might even reach 90. But back to today. Where we live, we have a great downtown area full of all sorts of little shops and boutiques. We haven't been able to just hang out and roam around for such a long time we decided it would be fun to explore some of the newer shops, look at all the artwork (we have so much artwork everywhere downtown including paintings that are in display cases on the walls) and just enjoy our town.
We discovered a root beer shop that opened up that serves root beer on tap. yummy! In the shop they had a time line of the history of soda pop. It was really cool and we made a game of finding when events happened. (Yep that counts as school so... I guess we can call it a field trip now.) We also went into a candy shop that has all the old candy and let the kids each pick out a candy. Then after walking around and Little Man getting a pretty bad nose bleed (an often occurrence for the poor guy) we decided to make one last stop to the local candy/ice cream shop. And lucky us it was "Happy Hour" and our ice cream was cheaper than we expected. Baby G got to enjoy her first ice cream cone and it was really fun watching her take licks and do the happy dance. I should have taken a picture but didn't think about it until just now. It was so fun to just take a quick break and relax.
The moral to this story, remember to enjoy what you have around you and that fun doesn't have to mean actually going somewhere.
Saturday... well... we could go to the farmer's market, walk/hike in the park (yes it is that big we have the option of either one), and as it will creep up to near 90 tomorrow, we could even splash in the creek. So much to do so little time and oh yeah the allergies here are triple most places and we are all dealing with them so... I guess we might just pick one thing to do tomorrow. *Ü*

Weekend Adventures

This past weekend was such a whirlwind of activity. I have been wanting to post about it all week but haven't had a chance to sit down and do much of anything. I have been running around the house trying to catch up with everything that we fell behind on which is well everything. My husband's youngest brother got married last weekend. It was a weekend of craziness but it was a lot of fun. I reflected a lot on my wedding (of course) and on my marriage and what has made my marriage work for 10 years. I love my husband more and more everyday. The day I said, "I do," I thought I loved him more than anyone could possibly love him (except for maybe his parents) but I know now that I love him even more now than I did then. It is amazing how our love for each other grows deeper each day. It is just how our love for the Lord is, at least mine. I grow deeper in love with Christ every day as I spend time with Him and He reveals more of Himself to me. I am reminded of a song I sang at church when I was a kid.

I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and over and over again
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and over and over again
He gets sweeter and sweeter as the days go by
Oh what a love between my Lord and I
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and over and over again

That is true not only for my Lord but for my husband too. Something I was thinking about as I watched my brother-in-love profess his love for his bride in front of all their family and friends.
Here are a few pictures from this weekend.

My Little Man

My little man turned 9 today! I cannot believe I am a mommy to a 9 year old. It is baffling to me how it can seem like just yesterday I was holding him in my arms for the very first time. I remember wondering what he would be like. What kind of personality he would have. I had no idea what I was in for as a mommy. I thought I did, I had a lot of experience taking care of little ones. I was the oldest of four kids, I was a babysitter from the time I was 12, I was a nursery worker, and a preschool teacher. I had taken several Early Childhood courses; I thought I was an expert. I read several books and asked every parent I knew how they did things. I still had no idea what mommyhood had in store for me. Some say that parents need to go to parenting classes before they become parents. Some are pushing for classes to be taught in high schools now. It is the parents job to teach their children how to parent by the way but that is a whole other post I could do just on that thought. However, no one can really be prepared for the awesomeness of mommyhood until one becomes a mommy.
Now he is 9 and he has three little sisters. He is such a great big brother always ready to take on the challenge of taking care of his sisters. He has such character and integrity already at such a young age. He is pretty much in a constant state of joy and loves having fun. He can never sit still for very long unless he is reading a book. He has so much energy it amazes everyone. He has two speeds “full speed ahead” and “asleep” there is no middle ground with him. He has taught me so much about myself and about the Lord in his short time here. Nine is like the halfway mark to adulthood and I am looking forward to the second half of his childhood even though it means that I have crossed over from him calling me “mommy” to him calling me “mom.”

Weblink Wednesday - Pencil Puzzles

It's Wednesday already!?! I cannot believe it. This week is just flying by so quickly for me.

So this week I wanted to share a fun link that isn't a "school" site but I use it often to print out fun mazes, and number puzzles for the kids to do when they want something to break up the normal school stuff. The name of the site is KrazyDad.

My kids love doing Kidoku (Sudoku for kids) for warm ups first thing and this site has so many in different levels. It also has puzzles perfect for moms who love the challenge of a Sudoku or Kakuro (aka Cross Sums), or Anticrostic. I print out puzzles for myself often too. Happy solving.
