The elm-tree avenue was all overgrown, the great gate was never unlocked, and the old house has been shut up for several years. Yet voices were heard about the place, the lilacs nodded over the high wall as if they said, "We could tell fine secrets if we chose," and the mullein outside the gate made haste to reach the keyhole that it might peep in and see what was going on. ~ Under the Lilacs by Louisa May Alcott
When I was little I read Under the Lilacs probably a dozen times. Alcott is one of my top 3 most favorite authors. Her books are absolute timeless classics.
The aroma coming from the lilacs is wonderfully intoxicating right now. And just breathing in the sweetness and enjoying the gorgeous purple brings happy memories and smiles to this busy mommy.

Lovely photos, I can almos smell the lilacs. :)
ReplyDeleteI have not read that book, will have to add it to my list. Thanks!
These are lovely photos! I love the bokeh in them; so pretty! I think I read Under the Lilacs, but if so only once and I don't remember it. Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom were my favorite books of hers. I'll have to go back and read Under the Lilacs again.
ReplyDeleteMy faves were Little Women, Little Men and Jo's Boys - trying to get my grandsons into Little Men right now but they're wanting Boxcar Children instead. :)
ReplyDeleteLilacs, though, are definitely one of my absolute favorites and your photos are so gorgeous! I love my easy to use digital camera, but it doesn't have a zoom that goes far enough for some neighbors lilacs so I doubly appreciated seeing these. I'll have to share them with my senior mom for some gardening ideas. Thank you for a delightful Sweet Shot Tuesday. :)
Thank you so much ladies for the kind words.
ReplyDeleteJulie, I hope you love the story as much as I do.
Cedar, Eight Cousins is my most favorite of all. I read it so many times I broke the binding on my book. Rose in Bloom I didn't read until I was an adult so I have only read it twice but loved it too. Now they are on my read aloud list for my daughters but we are in the middle of the Little House Books.
Kaye, my son read part of Little Women for a school assignment and liked it. I am hoping he'll read Little Men. He has a stack of books he is working through so after that, we will see.
