A Divine Encounter

Hebrews 13:2
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,
for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

She was walking up the driveway looking a bit dazed and confused. It is not out of the ordinary for people to walk my driveway, I manage a storage facility. People come by all the time, looking a bit lost when they are looking for the office not realizing it is my house. But this time there was something different. She walked in from the street, no car or bike could be seen. I went outside wondering what kind of encounter this was going to be.

“Can I help you?” came the unsure words out of my mouth as I approached.

She looks up asking if this is the office. “Why yes it is,” I say ready to find out how I could help her.

“Can I sit down for a minute?”

“Absolutely come sit.” I was a bit confused about her request but more than willing to let her sit on my porch steps.

She comes and sits down on the steps of the porch. I sit down next to her.

“Here is my story,” she starts off. “I recently had surgery and was going for a walk. I was going to walk to the light on the corner but can’t make it. Can I use your phone to call for a ride?”

Of course, absolutely. I step inside to grab the phone. She dials a number and asks a friend if they were free to pick her up. She hangs up after she finds out they aren’t able to come get her. So she asks if she could just rest for a minute.

I sit down next to her making sure she has some water to hydrate while she regains her strength. And then we talk. She wasn’t expecting me to sit down and be an ear. She just really was hoping she could rest in the shade. She had no idea the person who she would encounter would be willing to take time from her busy day to be a friend to a perfect stranger.

Hearing about what she was walking through at the time and the current trials she was facing, I became that confidant she needed at that moment. I can now pray for her and intercede for her while she walks through her valley.

My encounter with her was an answer to a prayer, or more like a complaint. I have friends who talk about their divine encounters. One friend has encounters all the time and I love hearing about them. I must admit that I was getting jealous though. I stay home pretty much all day every day. I am not out and about that often which means I rarely get that opportunity to be Jesus to a stranger. I asked God to give me a divine encounter. I really wanted one; I hadn’t had one in such a long time. I asked and He answered. He gave me a desire of my heart, a divine encounter.

Like A Child (Repost)

Looking back…

There are many times throughout my day where I have the opportunity to hear God speak to me. I miss most of them I am sure, as I am self-absorbed in all that I have determined I need to accomplish. I watch Baby G as she goes through her day always learning and exploring letting no minute go wasted as she learns everything she possibly can about the world around her. She is so determined to learn everything all the time that she even refuses to nap or sleep if she thinks she will miss anything going on. She will not even sleep in her car-seat because she wants to watch everything that happens at wherever we have gone. As I watch her, I am reminded that I am to be like her, constantly on the lookout for what God wants to teach me next. I need to take more time to pay attention and less time being a Martha.

Several years ago when Little Man was probably 2 we were watching Veggie Tales Rack Shack and Benny and God spoke to me through that video regarding a current situation I was going through. Recently God spoke to me again through Veggie Tales while we were all watching Gideon: Tuba Warrior. He reminded me about the power of prayer and that the smallest amount of faith is all you need. There was a great man named George Mueller who opened an orphanage with 50 cents. He operated the orphanage by faith that God would be faithful to supply all their needs and never asked for a donation. Instead, God faithfully provided daily. Never once did the children go hungry-not once did they miss a meal. All because Mueller was faithful to pray and believe. Mueller asked and God did, it was that simple. Wow! What an amazing example for me right now when there are so many uncertainties. I pray and I do know that God is faithful but that day, I needed encouragement and God knew it.

Little G excited about the petals she found.
God speaks through everything all the time and my job is just to pay attention. Do I pay attention as I should? Not very well, I am sure. I know that there are days that go by when I am constantly in prayer but I do not think I stop to listen. Other days I am so absorbed in accomplishing the day's tasks that I forget to slow down and pay attention. I need to watch how my little baby never wastes a learning opportunity and apply that to my adult life. I need to realize that just as I set up learning opportunities for my children He sets them up for me. I cannot be distracted with life and miss those opportunities.

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42 ESV

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!”
Psalm 46:10 ESV

Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.
Luke 18:17 ESV

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wrote this post about 5 years ago. It is so amazing to me how I seem to be continually learning what God was already trying to teach me. Am I a slow learner or am I learning more deeply the lessons that God has for me? I pray I am learning more deeply. Looking back at previous posts has caused me to stop and remember. Remember that God is nowhere near finished with me yet. Little G is no longer a baby but is still teaching me to be constantly on the lookout for what God is teaching me.
Mommy Lesson 8 - Don't be a Nagging Mommy
You know the verse that says that a nagging wife is not fun to live with? Well actually there are 5 verses about a nagging wife in Proverbs. Yeah, five, I am guessing that means nagging wives have been around since the fall of man. Okay so, you might be asking yourself right now, what do nagging wives have to do with mommyhood lessons?
A whole lot actually.
As my not so little kids have gotten older I have learned how they like to not tell me everything right away anymore. Whether they are processing their feelings about something or it’s just something they are thinking about, me nagging them to tell me right away is not something I should be doing. They need space and time and will tell me when they are ready. If I have done my job then my relationship with them is strong enough that I can have the confidence that they will talk to me when they are ready and they have the confidence to know I’m ready to listen when they are ready to talk. Believe me this is an active everyday lesson for me right now. I catch myself nagging them all the time when I perceive something is wrong and the more I nag, the less willing they are to talk. In fact usually said tween goes to their room to be alone.
Nagging is like a continual annoying drip, it's a sound that makes you just want to bury your head under the pillow at night to make the sound go away. Think of that drip from a gutter drain when it is raining. drip…Drip…DRip…DRIp…DRIP… it seems to just get louder and louder with each drop. When you nag, it is just like that. A nagging mom is not winning any child’s heart. But a patient pleasant mom does win hearts.
So do brownies - just saying.
So I am learning to not nag and give them some space. Let them know that when they are ready to talk I am here ready to listen. And that it is safe to talk to me. If they have a fear of getting in trouble when they talk to me they won’t be coming anytime soon or probably ever. So don’t nag or badger your kids or your hubby. Or you might find them in the corner of the roof huddled together just to get away from you. Or maybe even roaming a desert wilderness somewhere where it is quiet.
Proverbs 19:13 (HCSB) A foolish son is his father's ruin, and a wife's nagging is an endless dripping.
Proverbs 21:9 (HCSB) Better to live on the corner of a roof than to share a house with a nagging wife.
Proverbs 21:19 (HCSB) Better to live in a wilderness than with a nagging and hot-tempered wife.
Proverbs 25:24 (HCSB) Better to live on the corner of a roof than in a house shared with a nagging wife.
Proverbs 27:15 (HCSB) An endless dripping on a rainy day and a nagging wife are alike.
Mommy Time
What do you do for Mommy Time? I enjoy taking my camera outside and just take pictures of what I see. I love being alone in my thoughts while I take in God's creation all around me. If you take the time to notice, you will be amazed by what you can see. It is a way for me to get some quiet time with God too. When I go out expecting God to show me something even the smallest something, He does.
I can't sit and have a "quiet time", doing nothing and listen for God. My mind wanders through my list of things left to do and what still needs to be taken care of. But if I go out with my camera, I seem to be able to move all of those thoughts to the back of my mind and allow God to minister to me. Sometimes just a verse pops into my head, other times it's an object lesson with the ant that catches my attention. I get so much more from taking pictures than just a pretty photo.
Most of the time, as a mom, we can find ourselves constantly going and going, not really slowing down enough to see what is around us. And while there are many things I enjoy doing like blogging, sewing, crocheting and knitting, baking, gardening or reading a good book; going outside with my camera in hand to take pictures of what is around me is one of my most favorite ways to unwind and get myself back in focus. For me, time seems to almost stop, I can go out for a couple minutes or a couple hours and it all seems the same to me. But when I come inside I feel so refreshed and ready to take on the challenges that face me.
