Water Colors

Like our tree? This is the begining of our fall board. We used to make a board for every season like a classroom buliitin board. (The school teacher in me coming out.) Right before I am ready to take it down, I take a picture of it so we can remember our handywork.
Here is something we haven't done before though. We made our own watercolors! They turned out pretty cool. Here is the recipe.
Water Color Paint
  • 3 tablespoons clear vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons corn syrup
  • food coloring
Mix vinegar and baking soda. I used a 2 cup liquid measuring cup.
When the bubbles are settled, add the cornstarch and syrup.
Stir together, the consistancy is strange if you have nevr used cornstarch as a thinckening agent.
Put about one tablespoon into little containers. (The book I adapted this from says to use plastic bottle lids which I didn't use.) I used a small muffin tin. I think next time I will use empty applsauce containers.
Add food coloring to each container to make your desired colors.
Use immediatly or let them dry and use like normal watercolor paints.
We dried ours overnight.
The kids had so much fun making the paint and seeing what cool colors we could make.
