I love growing zucchini. When I grow zucchini I feel like I am a successful gardener with a very green thumb. Zucchini just keeps on growing and growing and growing…
Now, for the novice gardener, I have to tell you that you are not supposed to let them become ginormous zucchini monsters unless you are trying to win a blue ribbon in a contest. But I have a bad habit of not picking them when you are supposed to. You know, like when they are the size you can buy in the grocery store.
I tend to pick them at the point where I can use just 1 zucchini when the recipe calls for 4. These green giants average 18 inches long! They are about 4 1/2 inches in diameter which gives them a circumference of about 14 inches around! Wowzers! Yeah, they are way past their prime for picking. I feel very accomplished for growing these giant beauties.
Useful information... you can get about 5 cups of grated zucchini from one of those giant beauties.
Of course as I accept the blue ribbon for not picking my zucchini when they are at their tastiest and normal size I would have to thank Mister Bee as I could not grow these beauties without him.

those looks SO yummy!! and love the bee shot!
ReplyDeleteI love those big 'uns too. Heck, if you are just baking with tthem, it really doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteIf you're gonna dip them in ranch and eat them plain well, then pick them small. But these dandies do just fine for my cookies or bread and I get more out of them!
Our weird summer has prevented even the zukes from doing well so not many are tryi8ng to get rid of them!
