Paperclips and Pencils

I cannot remember where I heard of this website, but there is a website called Think! where you can find several great ideas to encourage kids to think outside of the box. It seems ideas are posted weekly but I have not participated in their weekly challenges. Instead, when I need an idea I go to this site for inspiration.
One of the ideas posted  said to use a handful of paperclips and a handful of pencils to create something. So... I filled the kitchen table with pencils and paperclips and told the kids to make something, anything with just paperclips and pencils.

Little Man decided to go vertical with his design.
He really had a difficult time figuring out how to make the pencils stay upright while attached to each other with paperclips as they would slip out. It was a great lesson for him to figure out how to counter balance.

The girls of course made jewelry, who could blame them? Every girls needs a paperclip bracelet and matching necklace with a pencil pendant.

This post is linked to Sweet Shot Tuesday (even though it is Wednesday).

  1. i love to stimulate kids to problem solve. team work is another good one! critical thinking, too. you can't memorize those and it's like exercise, you have to practice it to get better. great job! (cool shots, too!)
